James Ruskin vs Mark Broom

In terms of UK techno, there's few who can match the credentials of Mark Broom and James Ruskin. Broom has been active on the scene since back in the early '90s and has the discography to back it up. R&S, Soma, Mo-Wax and Warp have all given a home to his productions down the years, while more recently it's been Nic Fanciulli's Saved Records—with whom he last year released Acid House—who have been the primary outlet for his classicist techno excursions.

James Ruskin first made his mark a little later than Broom but not by much. He set up his Blueprint imprint in 1996 and has since released countless numbers of his own 12-inches alongside his work for revered Berlin imprint Tresor.

In terms of their work in tandem, Broom and Ruskin first released a trio of 12-inches together before launching their joint project: The Fear Ratio. This moniker first saw the light when they released the album ‘The Light Box’. Their name certainly signalled a shift in approach. Ambient and experimental passages rub shoulders with gritty electro and techno across its 11 main tracks and a couple of bonus remixes of Warp's Plaid and Ruskin and Broom adopt another alias, Deadhand, for their remix of ‘Guv Three’.  The album was followed by two more EP’s on Blueprint namely ‘The Morning Blues’ and ‘Skana’.
